HIGHLANDS SCHOOL BELIEFS

Our Code was developed in the fall of 1995 when our entire Highlands School Family came together as a community of learners to discuss our beliefs about the standards we needed to establish in order to live and learn together. The faculty selected one word, RESPECT, which through an acrostic poem simply but holistically reflects both the adults' and students' standards for behavior within our learning community. Our code is as follows:

RESPECT ONE ANOTHER'S RIGHT TO LEARN

EVERYONE HAS A RIGHT TO FEEL SAFE AT SCHOOL

SPEAK SOFTLY AND BE A GOOD LISTENER

PROVE THAT YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR YOUR ACTIONS

ENCOURAGE KINDNESS

CARE ENOUGH TO DO YOUR BEST

TAKE PRIDE IN YOUR SCHOOL

Our Behavioral Beliefs hang proudly throughout our school for all of us to see, to remember, and to uphold. They are also displayed in each classroom. Further, we recognize the importance of maintaining a whole school culture; therefore, these beliefs and their ensuing expectations are consistent at every grade level, in every classroom, and in all common areas of our school including the library, cafeteria, playground, and gymnasium.

Our Highlands School family recognizes that in order for these beliefs to be more than mere words, we need to continually practice, expect, and consistently reinforce them. They have become for us an integral part of our school culture and we are proud of them and proud to live by them.
