How to Request Materials from the NOBLE System

  1. From HRMS Library site, click on Peabody Institute Library
  2. Key in title of book in space provided. Search “All Libraries.”
  3. If a copy is not available in Danvers, click on “Request” button above search bar.
  4. Key in your NOBLE library card number in the space provided.
  5. Key in your pin number. (request a number at the circulation desk at PIL)
  6. Choose a pickup location from the dropdown menu.
  7. Complete “cancel if not filled by” information if desired.
  8. Click “Submit” and you will be told if your request was successful.

To find out if requested materials have arrived:

  1. From HRMS Library site, click on Peabody Institute Library
  2. Click on “Access Your Account.”
  3. Key in your library card number and your pin number, and click “Submit.”
  4. Here’s where you can check on your holds and items you currently have checked out; renew items; modify your PIN, and cancel requests.

Not available in the NOBLE system?
Click on Virtual Catalog, complete the login information, and click “Login.” Next, click on “Login to the Virtual Catalog” and then “Searching/Requesting.”  Search by title, author, subject, or ISBN. Click on “Searching” and scroll down to find a match.

How to Access and Use Grolier Online Encyclopedia

1.      From HRMS Library site, click on Peabody Institute Library

2.      Click on Information Services, then Databases.

3.      Click on Encyclopedias, then Grolier Online.

4.      Enter your MA Library Card Number, or our HRMS number; then click Go.

5      Click Grolier Online.

6.      Key in your search term.

7.      Explore other features.

How to Access and Use E-books

  1. Follow Steps 1 and 2 above.
  2. Click on E-books, then Gale Virtual Reference Collection.
  3. Follow Step 4 above, then click Gale Virtual Reference Library.
  4. Click on “Show All” to get the list of Ebooks.
  5. Choose the Ebook you would like to search and make sure you “within this publication” is checked.

Note: We also have a selection of Ebooks available from our library page: Select Ebooks in the drop down menu and click “Go.” ID: ask in the library or consult the print handout.

Things You Didn’t Know About Google

Advanced Search Operators: (found at http://www.google.com/help/operators.html)

  • Link: finds all web pages that have links to a specified page

            Ex: link:www.danvers.mec.edu/hrmslibrary  link:zapatopi.net/treeoctopus

  • Related: lists web pages that are similar to a specified web page

         Ex: related:http://www.renaissanceconnection.org/

  • Info: will present some information Google has about that page

            Ex. Info:whitehouse.org

  • Define: will provide a definition of the words you enter after it, gathered from various online sources    Ex: define:semiannual            biennial            biannual

            Ex: define:carpe diem

  • Inurl:ppt dewey decimal

            Try Search #3 Entire Web Search

            Key in a search word (example: reading) and hit return

            Click on refinement at the top to see only PowerPoints, Word, Smartboard, etc.

            Google Alerts are email updates of the latest relevant Google results (web, news, etc.) based on your choice of query or topic.

            With Google Reader, keeping up with your favorite websites is as easy as checking your email. Google Reader constantly checks your favorite news sites and blogs for new content.

Sometimes Google doesn’t provide the best search.  Ex: Key Terms Alternatives

            Google: death penalty. No suggestions w/out the key terms are offered

            Ask.com: death penalty gives you alternative key words in the left menu
