Tips for Parents

Guidance Events:

In addition to supporting the academic, personal and social needs of our students, the guidance department organizes several activities throughout the school year.  Here are some of the things you can look forward to this year:

Transition:
Middle school counselors play a crucial role in the transition of elementary students to the middle school and of middle school students to the high school.  These transition activities include visits to elementary schools, 5th grade tours at HRMS and grade 5 parent night.  The transition from 8th grade includes a visit from the high school team  to discuss the course selection process, a grade 8 parent meeting, and move-up day with tours at the high school.

Red Ribbon Day Events:
Red Ribbon Day promotes a drug, alcohol and violence free safe zone for kids.  Activities such as an assembly with speakers from K.I.D.S. Care, diversity club and student council is held as well as a poster contest for students.  Red ribbon pins are distributed at lunch.

Career Fair:
A career fair is held in the spring for 8th grade students. 15 professionals from a variety of careers speak to the students about a day in the life of their profession.

Peer Mediation:
Peer Mediators are trained to help students resolve peer conflicts.  Mediators are trained both at the end of their 7th grade year and the beginning of 8th grade.   Students can be referred for a mediation by a teacher, administrator, counselor or they can refer themselves.

Student Council:
The student council represents the interests of the student body and provides communication  between faculty and the student body.  The student council assists with community service projects and school events.

Please contact your guidance counselor if you have questions.
